The CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi is escalating on multiple fronts, with a legal challenge mounted against internet shutdowns and new serious charges filed by the police. The Delhi High Court is currently hearing a plea that contests the suspension of mobile internet services in parts of Central Delhi, citing them as "illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional".
The Software Freedom Law Centre, India (SFLC.In) filed the petition, arguing that the Ministry of Home Affairs' orders to suspend internet services within a 1.5-kilometre radius of Jantar Mantar are an extraordinary coercive power that infringes upon constitutional freedoms. The petitioner claims these orders, issued on July 17, 20, 22, and 23, lack disclosed public emergency or proportional justification for a blanket suspension.
Adding to the tension, Delhi Police have now added an "attempt to murder" charge to the case related to the CJP protest violence. Heavy police force has been deployed around Jantar Mantar, reflecting the heightened security concerns. These developments come as thousands continue to gather at the protest site, undeterred by measures like internet shutdowns and the temporary closure of 18 metro stations.
The CJP has vowed a nationwide agitation if their demand for the removal of Dharmendra Pradhan is not met within two days. As talks between CJP and the government are expected to continue, the situation remains fluid, with legal battles and intensified police actions marking the ongoing demonstration in the capital.
