Manipur CM: Peace is the Only Path to Development Amidst Strife
Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh stresses that peace and mutual trust are crucial for development, condemning recent violence and outlining a hopeful future.
Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh recently underscored a critical message: the path to development in the state is inextricably linked with peace. His remarks came as he addressed the public from the First Manipur Rifles Ground, emphasizing the need for harmony amidst ongoing challenges.
Highlighting India's global standing as one of the fastest-growing countries in terms of economy and infrastructure, CM Singh stated that Manipur's progress must follow a similar trajectory, driven by internal stability. "The Centre has taken up many steps to improve the law and order situation in the state, besides holding talks with representatives of different communities. Peace is most important for development," he affirmed.
The state has grappled with significant turmoil, including ethnic violence that has claimed at least 260 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023. This unrest between the valley-based Meiteis and the Kukis in the hill districts led to a period of President's Rule. It was lifted on February 4, paving the way for Y Khemchand Singh to assume the Chief Minister's office.
CM Singh passionately appealed for unity, stating, "To have peace, we must have mutual trust and foster love among all communities." He acknowledged that despite ongoing developmental works across the state, isolated incidents continue to threaten the goal of lasting peace.
In a strong condemnation, the Chief Minister addressed a recent tragedy: "I, on behalf of the government, strongly condemn yesterday's incident in which two persons were killed in an attack. The perpetrators will certainly be arrested." This was in reference to an attack by suspected militants who killed two people and injured two others in Langka Naga village, Kangpokpi district, on Friday. He reiterated his government's commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring justice.
Looking ahead, CM Singh outlined his administration's broad objectives, which include nurturing the future of the youth, empowering women, supporting farmers and entrepreneurs, and diligently preserving Manipur's rich cultural heritage. These goals, he stressed, can only be fully realized in an environment of peace and cooperation.
