Parameshwara backs free discussion in varsities after ABVP protest at Azim Premji University

Protests by ABVP workers disrupted Azim Premji University in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening after they allegedly forced their way onto the Sarjapur Road campus, injuring security personnel and a student. The university’s security team reported that six guards and a first-year student, Mohammed Ali Ahmed, were injured as the group attacked staff and vandalised property. Police detained several demonstrators and registered a case against ABVP members under sections related to unlawful assembly, trespass, assault, criminal intimidation and damage to property. Investigations are ongoing.

Speaking to reporters, State Home Minister G Parameshwara defended the police response and called for open discussions on campuses, even on contentious topics. “They were preparing to conduct a seminar. Let them take any subject. What else will happen in a seminar apart from discussion? There will be arguments both in favour and against,” he said, adding that the government would act against those who interfere with events and that police would not stay silent when law and order is challenged.

Parameshwara’s remarks came as authorities sought to balance academic freedom with campus safety, emphasizing that universities should host discussions while ensuring a safe environment for students and staff. The incident has prompted renewed discussion about how to manage campus events and protests without compromising security.

Hours after the clashes, officials reiterated that steps were being taken to restore normalcy and protect educational spaces, signaling a continued focus on maintaining civility and the right to free inquiry within universities.
