Originally budgeting $220 million, officials later projected only $124 million in revenue by late May, leading to an anticipated $23 million shortfall even after implementing cost-cutting measures like layoffs and program reductions.

These internal projections sharply contradict public statements made by center officials, with one Justice Department lawyer even asserting in a lawsuit that Trump’s name was vital in saving the Kennedy Center from financial collapse. Yet, documents obtained by The Post reveal that, internally, officials were aware of the severe downturn long before such public claims were made.

In response to the report, a Kennedy Center spokesperson attributed current financial woes to mismanagement by previous leadership but did not dispute the stark fiscal projections for 2026. The controversy culminated in a court order in late May, mandating the removal of Trump's name from the institution.
