West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari blasts the former Trinamool regime over the deadly Taratala warehouse collapse in Kolkata, blaming corruption. An arrest has been made as political tensions escalate.
A political firestorm has erupted in West Bengal following the tragic collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Taratala, Kolkata, which claimed 11 lives. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has vehemently blamed the previous Trinamool Congress regime, accusing them of widespread corruption and irregularities that he asserts led to this catastrophe.
Addressing the State Assembly, CM Adhikari declared, "Taking money everywhere has turned the City of Joy into a City of Death. This [accident] is the result of your sins." He specifically pointed fingers at former Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, alleging that Hakim had signed off on the faulty design of the collapsed structure. Adhikari vowed that "No one will be spared" in the ensuing investigation.
The Chief Minister highlighted concerns regarding the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) approval process for building plans. He implicated Kalicharan Banerjee, former Officer on Special Duty to Firhad Hakim, suggesting that no plan was approved without Banerjee's involvement, often referred to as 'Kali'. Adhikari stated, "If Kali is picked up [arrested], everything will come out. Without 'Kali', no plan was approved." He further claimed that Kalicharan Banerjee was involved in financial transactions for the Trinamool Bhavan construction.
Adding to the dramatic turn of events, Kolkata Police later arrested Kalicharan Banerjee in connection with the Taratala warehouse collapse. This development has placed Firhad Hakim, an MLA from Kolkata Port, in a precarious position. Hakim had recently shifted his allegiance from Mamata Banerjee to a rebel faction of MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee. He had also been seen attempting to align himself with the current BJP regime by praising CM Suvendu Adhikari.
The incident underscores deep-seated issues of accountability and alleged corruption within the civic administration, sparking a fierce political debate over who is truly responsible for the lives lost in this devastating incident.
