Appointed to be the next CJI on October 30, he is set to lead the Supreme Court for about 15 months before his term ends with his 65th birthday on February 9, 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Kant rose from a small-town lawyer to the country’s highest judicial office. He earned a Master’s degree in law with top honors, described as a 'first class first,' from Kurukshetra University in 2011. His rise included a stint as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court beginning October 5, 2018, before his elevation to the Supreme Court.
On the Supreme Court bench, Kant has been associated with several high-profile matters, including rulings and orders related to the abrogation of Article 370, free speech, and citizenship rights. He also participated in a presidential reference concerning the powers of Governors and Presidents in dealing with bills passed by state legislatures. Notably, he was part of a bench that kept the colonial-era sedition law in abeyance pending further government review and directed the Election Commission to disclose details of voters—about 65 lakh—excluded from Bihar’s draft electoral rolls while hearing petitions challenging the panel’s decision to revise the rolls.
