In late December 2022, just weeks before the killings, Clancy searched for information on suicide methods, bipolar disorder, and insomnia. The following month, her focus shifted to postpartum depression, indicating a spiraling concern for her mental well-being.
This digital trail follows a poignant note she had written in October 2022, expressing profound doubts about her parenting abilities. In the note, Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, voiced anxieties about whether she had made the right choice to stop breastfeeding her 8-month-old and her concerns about potentially having a fourth child. She wrote, “I’m terrified of something happening to my kids or doing something wrong to mess up their development.” She also reflected on the overwhelming amount of parenting information available, calling it “unhealthy.”
The defense in Clancy’s trial is arguing that she was suffering from severe mental health conditions, specifically bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis. Postpartum psychosis is a rare but severe condition that can profoundly distort a woman's perception of reality after childbirth.
