Two builders face an FIR after a software engineer drowns in a water-filled pit in Sector 150 Noida, blamed for lack of fencing and visibility in dense fog.
NOIDA: A 27-year-old software engineer, Yuvraj Mehta, died after his SUV breached a damaged boundary wall and fell into a 30-foot water-filled pit in Sector 150 around midnight. An FIR was registered against MZ Wishtown Planners Pvt Ltd and Lotus Greens Construction Pvt Ltd for negligence, with investigators noting the plot lacked a boundary wall, barricades, reflectors or adequate lighting.
The accident happened in thick fog as Mehta was negotiating a sharp turn near ATS Le Grandiose. He managed to get out of the vehicle and climb onto its roof, flashing his phone's torch for help and calling his father, Raj Mehta, a retired SBI director, who reached the spot within minutes. Despite the desperate pleas heard at the edge of the pit, responders struggled to locate him in the near-blind conditions.
Rescue teams faced near-blind conditions; SDRF and NDRF were on the way, but the search was hampered by fog and poor visibility, with responders describing only a thin ray of light from Mehta’s phone guiding them. The car contained about 30 feet of water, and Mehta, who could not swim, could not be saved.
The FIR cites sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106 (causing death by negligence) and 125 (act endangering life) of the BNS. The tragedy highlights the absence of fencing, barricades, reflectors and proper lighting on undeveloped plots. Local residents have demanded accountability as authorities review safety norms and enforcement for such sites.
This incident has stirred protests from residents who insist on immediate safety audits and stricter compliance to prevent similar deaths in the future.
