Britons are being urged to prepare for a potentially challenging winter, with a government minister advising households to stock up on food and water. This comes amidst warnings that the world is facing the biggest El Niño weather phenomenon in 1,000 years, which is predicted to bring a wet and stormy winter to the UK, and extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires globally.

Environment Secretary Angela Eagle emphasized the importance of resilience, stating that having a small store of food can significantly help before emergency services arrive. The government plans to launch a campaign to guide citizens on preparing for national emergencies, highlighting the need for personal readiness.

El Niño is a natural climate pattern characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Occurring typically every two to seven years, it disrupts global weather patterns and contributes to rising global temperatures.

Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicate that this El Niño is expected to peak towards the end of the year, with its impacts likely extending well into next year.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo warned that this exceptionally warm ocean event has the "potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies across the world." While the UK prepares for wetter winters, other regions, particularly in Asia, are anticipated to face severe flooding. The call to stock up is a proactive measure, encouraging individuals to be self-sufficient for a few days without power or water, reinforcing the message of national resilience in the face of unprecedented weather events.
