Norris Clinches F1 Title, Britain's First Since Hamilton, in Abu Dhabi Drama

Lando Norris clinched his maiden Formula 1 world championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, finishing third as Max Verstappen won the race. Oscar Piastri finished second in the race and third in the championship, marking a strong McLaren showing for the season finale.

Entering the final race Norris led Verstappen by 12 points and Piastri by 16. Verstappen needed Norris to finish fourth or lower, and Piastri needed a win with Norris outside the top five; neither outcome materialized, allowing Norris to clinch the title by two points in the final standings.

Despite some McLaren strategy missteps earlier this season, Verstappen’s late surge—his eighth win of the year and 71st of his career—wasn’t enough to overhaul Norris’s lead, and the Briton sealed the crown after the checkered flag. The team celebrated as CEO Zak Brown congratulated the new champion. He reportedly told the team radio, "Lando, this is Zak from McLaren. Is this the world champion hotline? You did it! You did it! Awesome." Norris replied, "Oh my God, thanks so much. I love you guys. Thanks for everything."

After finishing the race, Norris broke into tears in his car before sharing a moment with his parents trackside and then embracing his crew. Piastri also enjoyed a strong weekend, finishing second, while Verstappen’s late push yielded a podium but not the title he sought.

This result makes Norris Britain's first F1 world champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, delivering a milestone moment for the country and a dramatic, memorable end to a season packed with twists.
