Trump to Unveil 'Foreign Plot' in 2020 Election Speech

Former President Donald Trump is set to deliver a highly anticipated "Speech to the Nation" this Thursday, where he reportedly plans to unveil a foreign plot to interfere in the 2020 presidential election. The address, scheduled for 9 p.m. Eastern time, was previewed by Trump on Truth Social, describing it as a major event. While the exact details remain under wraps, reports suggest the claims will be based on declassified intelligence information.

This upcoming speech is expected to reignite debates surrounding the 2020 election, an outcome Trump consistently claims he won despite official results. The speech could mention countries like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, which intelligence officials have previously cited as having sought to meddle in the election. Venezuela, in particular, is often a focus in some of Trump's supporter circles.

However, these claims stand in contrast to a report released in March 2021 by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. That report, reflecting the consensus of top intelligence agencies, concluded that no foreign adversary attempted to alter or hack into any “technical aspect” of the 2020 voting and reporting process. It specifically noted that, unlike in 2016, there were no “persistent Russian cyber efforts to gain access to election infrastructure.”

The intelligence report did, however, acknowledge different forms of foreign influence. It stated that Russia spread misinformation aimed at “denigrating President Joe Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party.” Iran, on the other hand, “carried out a multi-pronged covert influence campaign” intended to undermine Trump’s re-election prospects. China’s assessment was that neither candidate was “advantageous enough for China to risk getting caught meddling,” choosing instead to rely on traditional influence tools like economic measures and lobbying.

Trump’s announcement has generated significant speculation, with many anticipating that the speech will further fuel his long-standing claims about the 2020 election.
