Two people are dead and several others were injured after a planned fight at Leinbach Park escalated into a mass shooting this morning in Winston-Salem. Police said the incident began as a fight between groups near the park, just outside Jefferson Middle School, before gunfire erupted and multiple people exchanged shots.
Authorities have identified several victims and suspects, but the exact number of injuries and fatalities has not been confirmed. Investigators said there were multiple victims and that some of those involved may be juveniles.
At least three people were taken to hospital, according to local reports, as officers worked to account for everyone involved and determine who fired the shots. Officers said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and that the suspects remained at large more than two hours after responders arrived.
Leinbach Park will remain closed until further notice, and nearby roads were blocked as investigators collected evidence and searched the area. Officials noted that area schools were not placed on lockdown and classes were operating normally.
