Truck crash injures key witness in Sandeshkhali case; two die

A key witness in the Sandeshkhali case against jailed suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan was injured, and his son and driver were killed when a truck hit their car on the Basanti Highway near Basirhat in North 24 Parganas.
Ghosh, who was on his way to a court appearance, was rushed to hospital in Minakhan and later moved to Kolkata. His son, Satyajit, and driver, Sahanur Mollah, died in the crash. The truck driver remains at large as the investigation begins.
Families of the victims allege the crash could be connected to the Shahjahan case, suggesting it was a murder planned to silence the witness. Police have registered a case and launched an inquiry as the wider case continues to unfold.
Earlier, protests erupted in Sandeshkhali in February 2024 demanding Shahjahan and aides’ arrest over land grabbing and sexual assault allegations. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been probing the mob attack on ED officials who went to Shahjahan’s house in January 2024, with Ghosh identified as a prime witness in the proceedings.
Ghosh told reporters that he was in the back seat when the oncoming truck struck head-on, sending their vehicle into a roadside ditch. His son Biswajit claimed the incident was orchestrated and tied to Shahjahan’s orders, intensifying calls for a transparent investigation.
