US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was optimistic the UN Security Council would finalize a resolution backing an international security force for Gaza, speaking after a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in Canada. "We feel optimistic that it's going to happen," he said, noting ongoing conversations with countries to balance interests beyond just the security force and hoping for action soon.
Draft language circulating in Washington aims to follow up on a ceasefire in the two-year war and would seek to speed up humanitarian aid and, ideally, redevelopment of the Gaza Strip. While some allies want the Security Council to authorize any troop deployment, others emphasize that the resolution must give clear security footing to allow aid to reach civilians and to help curb Hamas's influence.

Rubio stressed that "if you really want to see a huge uptick in humanitarian assistance, but redevelopment, you're going to need to have security."
