India is gearing up for its comprehensive Census 2027, a mammoth exercise set to gather crucial demographic and socio-economic data across the nation. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially notified a list of 40 questions that enumerators will be asking citizens, signaling the commencement of preparations for this significant event. This census is particularly notable as it will include a caste query for the first time since India's independence.
The Household Schedule, as per the MHA notification, delves into a wide array of personal and family details. These include basic information such as name, relationship to the head of the household, sex, date of birth, age, and marital status. It also seeks details on nationality, religion, and whether an individual belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST), or other caste categories. Parental particulars will also be collected.
Beyond personal identity, the census will explore education and employment. Questions will cover mother tongue and other languages known, literacy and digital literacy status, educational institution attendance, highest educational level attained, and stream/discipline. For employment, enumerators will inquire about work status in the last year, category of economic activity, occupation, nature of industry, and class of worker. Non-economic activities and job-seeking status will also be recorded.
Migration and residence patterns are another key focus. Citizens will be asked about their birthplace, place of last residence, reasons for migration, duration of stay in the current village or town since their last migration, and permanent residential address. This data is vital for understanding population mobility and its impact on various regions.
The census will also gather information related to children, focusing on the number of children surviving at present, those ever born alive, and live births within the last year for women. A new addition to the questionnaire is the place of Covid-19 vaccination, reflecting the contemporary relevance of public health data.
Significantly, the census officers are authorized to ask for details like the total number of bank accounts, mobile number, Aadhaar number, Voter ID number, Passport number (if an Indian Passport holder), and availability of a Driving License. However, officials have clarified that these identification details are to be provided only "if available," emphasizing that no private data is being forcefully sought. J&K, Ladakh Census chief has reiterated this, ensuring privacy concerns are addressed.
The Census 2027 questionnaire features 13 new questions or data fields compared to the Census 2011, which had 29 questions. Following an initial self-enumeration phase, census enumerators will conduct a door-to-door verification process using a mobile application, ensuring accuracy and comprehensive coverage. The government has already released ₹4,102 crore for this colossal exercise, underscoring its national importance.
