Akhilesh Yadav’s Facebook account briefly suspended; govt denies role

New Delhi — Akhilesh Yadav's official Facebook page, followed by about 8.5 million people, was briefly suspended on Friday evening and restored on Saturday morning, as a clash over social media moderation and political voice unfolded. Facebook cited an abusive post as the reason for the action, and Meta later said the page had been restored after the issue was reviewed, with the content described as allegedly a 'violent sexual' post in nature. The government, however, distanced itself from the incident. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters that the government had nothing to do with the suspension and that Facebook acted under its policies. The suspension touched off a political back-and-forth. Samajwadi Party leaders called it an attack on democracy and accused the BJP of pressing an undeclared emergency to silence opposition voices. Some SP members and supporters argued that the move reflected an effort to curb dissent against the ruling party. SP Lok Sabha MP Rajeev Rai also criticized the move, saying blocking Yadav's account was a blow to India's democratic system and suggesting it was done at the behest of the ruling party. In one strand of the discussion, Yadav has said the suspension related to posts about a journalist's murder and a woman's death, with some reports describing the content as 'adult' or sensitive. He used the episode to question media pressures under the BJP and to protest what he described as attempts to silence socialists. Meta's stance was straightforward: a spokesperson said the page was restored once the issue was brought to their notice, citing the platform's review process and adherence to its policies.
