Mumbai, along with Thane and Pune, is currently under the grip of intense monsoon showers, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across various regions. The financial capital remains on red alert with no immediate relief from the rain expected.
Saturday saw significant waterlogging at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) railway station in Kurla, a major commuter hub. The persistent rainfall continued through Sunday morning, affecting daily life and causing widespread disruptions. The IMD's notification on July 4, 2026, placed Mumbai and Thane under a red alert, while the Konkan region and Pune district's ghat areas received an orange alert, indicating expectations of very heavy and persistent rainfall. Pune city itself is under a yellow alert, but there's a risk of minor landslides in its ghat areas.
In response to the severe weather, State Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has urged citizens to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. He confirmed that rescue teams, including NDRF and SDRF, have been deployed to assist the public, and efforts are underway to clear traffic from affected roads. Mahajan highlighted the severity, stating, “More than 200mm of rain has occurred in 12 hours, which is very heavy rain, I mean, for Mumbai, it is very heavy rain.” He also cautioned tourists against sightseeing near high-tide areas, citing that most accidents, including those from selfies, occur in such locations.
The heavy downpour has already led to multiple incidents of accidents and injuries, alongside widespread civic chaos and traffic jams. An earlier spell of rain caused numerous trees to fall across the western suburbs, blocking key routes. Tragically, the monsoon season has already claimed the life of an 11-year-old student.
Compounding the challenges, the Ministry of Railways has postponed the formal launch of bullet train tunneling work. Officials cited the continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai and the IMD's ongoing red and orange alerts as the reason for the delay, ensuring worker safety and operational feasibility.
