A $50 Hit to Your Wallet: Sony Increases PS5 Prices in the U.S.
Sony increases PlayStation 5 prices in the U.S. by $50 amid market challenges. Discover the impact on gamers and what's driving these changes.
As the Japanese company navigates a slow recovery in the videogame market and U.S. tariffs threaten to drive up costs, Sony (6758.T) opens a new tab and will raise the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by about $50 starting Thursday. The company announced in a blog post on Wednesday that the prices of all three PlayStation 5 consoles will increase in a similar manner, with the most costly PS5 Pro model anticipated to cost $749.99.

The price adjustments follow U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of broad tariffs on imports from major global manufacturing hubs like China and Japan, which sparked concerns about high material costs and supply chain disruptions. In April, Sony increased the cost of its consoles in a number of European markets. A month later, rival Xbox increased the sticker prices of its systems and add-ons in the US, Europe, Australia, and the UK.

With the release of high-end games like Take-Two Interactive's (TTWO.O), opens new tab "Grand Theft Auto VI" and Nintendo's (7974.T), opens new tab Switch 2, consoles were predicted to play a significant role in the growth of the videogame market this year.

However, the industry's growth rate has been called into question by console price increases and the postponement of the much-anticipated "GTA VI" until next year. Sony announced on Wednesday that the costs of PlayStation 5 accessories would not be altered for other markets.
Sony has reassured its customers that its priority remains improving the supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience the PlayStation 5. However, for now, the cost of entry for new US gamers looking to join the PlayStation ecosystem has just become a little higher. The long-term effects of this price increase on the US gaming market will be closely watched in the coming months.
