SC to Hear Mahua Moitra's Alleged Circuit House Eviction Plea
TMC MP Mahua Moitra's plea regarding her alleged late-night eviction from a Krishnanagar circuit house will be heard by the Supreme Court on October 1. A constitutional issue at stake!
The Supreme Court is set to hear Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra's petition on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Her plea alleges that district administration officials in Nadia, West Bengal, forcefully evicted her from a state-owned circuit house despite her being allotted a room there.
Moitra claims the incident, which occurred late one night in August in her constituency of Krishnanagar, involved her being pressured to vacate the premises.
She stated that a large crowd gathered outside, shouting "Jai Shri Ram" slogans, after she refused to leave.
She further alleges that this was an attempt to harass her, especially since no issues were raised during her booking or check-in.
The Krishnanagar MP had moved into the circuit house for an overnight stay following a Parliament session, asserting her right to stay as an MP. She highlighted that the property, located opposite the bungalows of both the District Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, is supposed to be a secure area, making the gathering of a crowd, let alone a "lynch mob," highly concerning.
During a brief hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised an objection to Ms. Moitra directly approaching the apex court, citing concerns about MPs' individual issues being brought before the Supreme Court and potential factual inaccuracies. However, Moitra's counsel, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, emphasized the matter involves an "important constitutional issue" and that a High Court had already issued a protective order.
He urged for an early listing of the case.
Ms. Moitra had previously sought the intervention of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding the alleged incident and had also threatened legal action over what she described as harassment.
