A deadly fire in a Meerut residence claimed six lives, including four-month-old twins, as investigators probe a suspected short circuit.
A devastating blaze tore through a three storey residential building in Meerut on Monday evening, claiming six lives, including five children. The fire broke out on the ground floor while 12 women and children were inside; the male members of the family had gone for evening prayers. The incident occurred in Lane No. 1 of Kidwai Nagar in the Lisari Gate area, with flames quickly engulfing the ground floor where a large amount of clothing material was stored, potentially aiding the spread.
The home belongs to Iqbal Ahmed, whose family runs a tailoring and online garment business. Investigators pointed to an electrical fault in a machine or home appliance as the likely trigger, though some residents questioned whether gas could have contributed to the blaze. The congested locality and the narrow lane impeded firefighting access, forcing engines to approach from nearby rooftops.
Firefighters finally reached the interior after breaching a wall, and seven people trapped inside were rescued. The deceased have been identified as Rukhsar (30), Anabiya and Inayat (twins, six months old), Aqdus (3), Mahvish (12) and Hammad (4). One injured woman, Ameera Bano (55), was hospitalized in a critical condition. The incident has prompted a probe into safety practices in such densely packed homes and storage spaces, with authorities aiming to determine the exact cause and prevent similar tragedies in the area.
