Uttar Pradesh's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls got another extension as the Election Commission pushed the deadline for filing claims and objections to March 6. This is the fourth extension in UP's SIR, the exercise intended to clean and verify the voter list ahead of the 2027 polls.
Under the revised schedule, the disposal of claims and objections is now due by March 27, roll health checks by April 3, and the final electoral rolls are to be published on April 10. The ECI said the decision was taken to ensure wider public participation and improve the accuracy of the rolls.
The extension comes after a formal request from UP Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa, and follows concerns raised by political parties about the deletion of voters during the claims and objections phase. In UP, nearly 32.6 million hearings are scheduled as part of the revision.
The process has seen extensions in other states as well, with West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala each receiving one extension during the ongoing revisions. In UP, the final list will be published on April 10, marking a careful, though extended, approach to ensuring all eligible voters are counted.
This extended timeline comes as parties prepare for the next electoral cycle, with officials insisting the goal remains strengthening the accuracy and participation in the state’s voter rolls.
