Telangana CM's US Trip Blocked: "Political Angle" Cited 🚨
Telangana CM Revanth Reddy's crucial US visit, aimed at bringing top educational institutions to Hyderabad, was denied by the Centre citing a "political angle." What does this mean for Telangana's youth?
In a significant political development, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has been denied permission by the Centre to proceed with the United States leg of his 'TelanganaRising' delegation tour. The decision, communicated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), cited a "political angle" as the reason for the refusal. This denial comes after the official delegation had already reached the United Kingdom, forcing Mr. Reddy to cut short his London tour and return to Hyderabad on August 23, instead of continuing to Boston as planned.
The State government had approached the MEA for clearance for both the U.K. and U.S. portions of the Chief Minister's official visit. While the U.K. visit received approval, the U.S. segment was blocked, much to the surprise of the delegation already abroad. The abrupt denial has sparked discussions on the intersection of federal and state governance, particularly concerning international engagements aimed at state development.
Mr. Revanth Reddy expressed his disappointment and strong disagreement with the Centre's decision. He clarified that the sole purpose of his proposed U.S. visit was to attract some of the world’s leading educational institutions, including prestigious names like Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Northeastern University, and Virginia Tech, to Telangana and its capital, Hyderabad. He emphasized that this initiative was directly aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy and aimed at providing Telangana's youth with access to world-class education, skills, and training.
“The only purpose of the visit was, as part of the National Education Policy, to bring the world’s best institutions to India, to Telangana and to Hyderabad,” Mr. Reddy stated, highlighting his belief that such collaborations would fulfill the aspirations of young people seeking quality education from top global institutions. He further added a call for unity, asserting that national development and the future of the youth should always rise above political considerations. “I have always believed we should all think beyond politics and elections when it comes to nation building and the future of the youth,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of a non-partisan approach to such critical matters.
Despite the setback and his mandated return, Chief Minister Reddy has shown resolve by instructing the accompanying officials to continue with the planned U.S. programme. They are tasked with finalizing proposed memoranda of understanding and partnership agreements with the targeted leading institutions. This move indicates Telangana’s proactive approach and continued commitment to fostering international educational ties, even in the face of central government obstacles. The incident is likely to stir further debate on the autonomy of state leaders in pursuing development initiatives on the global stage.
