New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday issued a notification for the election of its new party president, with nominations to be filed on Monday and the announcement expected on Tuesday. The setup points to a likely unopposed contest, as working president Nitin Nabin is widely expected to be named the party’s next national president, succeeding JP Nadda. The process details indicate nominations will be filed between 2 pm and 4 pm, scrutiny from 4 pm to 5 pm, and withdrawals allowed from 5 pm to 6 pm. If needed, the election will be held on Tuesday; otherwise, the announcement could come the same day.
Nitin Nabin, a five-term legislator and Bihar minister, was appointed the party’s working national president on December 14. Under the BJP’s constitution, the national president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the national council and state councils. A joint proposal from at least twenty members across five states, with active membership for four terms and fifteen years, can nominate a candidate. The president can hold the post for two consecutive three-year terms.
Reflecting on recent leadership precedents, in 2021 Nadda’s name was proposed by senior leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari and was seconded by members of the BJP national council.
