Hundreds of travellers faced significant delays and cancellations across the Midlands, Greater Manchester, and northwest England on Thursday following a major power failure in Manchester. The outage occurred at a Network Rail operating centre, leading to mass disruption across a large section of the rail network.
Train operators like Northern and TransPennine Express advised passengers against travelling, with TransPennine Express stating that their trains were "unable to run safely" due to a failure in the network's communications systems. Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TPE, acknowledged the significant impact, extending apologies to customers and warning of continued disruption into Friday. Passengers planning travel on Friday were strongly advised to check their journey details carefully and allow extra time.
The disruption affected numerous companies, including Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Lumo, Northern, TransPennine Express, and Transport for Wales. The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, expressed regret for passengers affected by the power outage in the North West.
The Manchester facility, where the electrical fault occurred, is one of 12 operating centres built to eventually manage the entire British rail network. It was inaugurated in 2014 with plans to control all railway operations in north-west England by 2034, replacing hundreds of older signal boxes. This incident highlights the critical reliance on these central operating hubs for the smooth functioning of the national rail system.
