US airstrikes on Friday, July 17, 2026, reportedly caused a surveillance tower at Iran's crucial Chabahar port on the Gulf of Oman to collapse. Images circulated on social media, later shared by U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, depicted the damaged structure. This incident marks a repeated targeting of the port by American forces, with Iranian state media acknowledging a third round of strikes, though without immediately confirming the tower's collapse. Iran described the tower as vital for overseeing commercial traffic, while also noting the presence of its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard at ports across the country.
Amidst these developments, India has swiftly clarified that its Shahid Beheshti terminal, which it operates at Chabahar port, sustained no damage. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed concerns, stating, "On the question of it being attacked, yes, we have seen some reports in that regard, but we can also tell you that the terminal itself did not face any damage." India operates one of the port's two terminals, with the other being Shahid Kalantari.
Chabahar port holds immense strategic importance for both India and Iran, serving as a cornerstone for boosting connectivity and trade ties. Both nations are actively advocating for its inclusion as an integral part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multi-modal network aimed at facilitating freight movement between India, Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe. The port provides India with direct access to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan.
The recent strikes come after the expiration of a U.S. waiver on its sanctions concerning Chabahar, which ended in April. Mr. Jaiswal acknowledged this, stating that discussions are underway with "relevant stakeholders as to how to take this particular issue forward." India has consistently maintained its position on ongoing hostilities in West Asia, emphasizing that civilian infrastructure must not be targeted under any circumstances.
