Israel announced on Thursday, September 10, 2026, that it had successfully demolished key tunnels constructed by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group beneath the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon. The massive operation resulted in a significant 4.1 magnitude tremor, felt across the region.
AFP journalists reported hearing multiple explosions, and a video shared by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz showed a huge fireball illuminating the night sky.
This demolition follows claims by Israeli authorities just days prior that they had taken control of the Ali al-Taher ridge, asserting that Hezbollah had established numerous underground passages there to facilitate attacks on Israel from this mountainous area. Israeli troops are currently occupying parts of southern Lebanon, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stating his intention to create a "security zone" aimed at preventing any assaults on Israel's northern border.
In a joint statement, Netanyahu and Katz described the destroyed infrastructure as "strategic terrorist infrastructure that was built over two decades, with Iranian funding and planning." They added that the destruction
completes the achievement of operational control over the Ali al-Taher ridge — above and below ground.
The United States Geological Survey confirmed the 4.1 magnitude tremor, aligning with reports from Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) which detailed a "massive explosion" on the Ali al-Taher ridge in the Nabatieh region, leading to "tremors and a powerful rumble." Local residents also bore witness to the powerful event. Joelle Fares, a recent resident of Majayoun, told AFP, "We were sitting there and everything shook."
AFP journalists in south Lebanon also reported hearing "huge explosions" on Thursday evening, September 11. The Israeli army further elaborated on the scale of the operation, stating that the Hezbollah infrastructure extended for over two kilometers (1.2 miles).
It reportedly housed
dozens of Iranian-made rockets, missiles, and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), as well as machine guns, dozens of anti-tank missiles,
highlighting the extensive military capabilities that Israel claims to have neutralized.
