The Indian Premier League off-spinner R Ashwin has declared his retirement. In 2025, the 38-year-old played for the Chennai Super Kings. In the tournament this year, he took seven wickets from nine games at an average of 40.43 and an economy rate of 9.13 with the ball.

They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today. In 2009, Ashwin made his international debut while playing for the Chennai Super Kings. He had a breakthrough season in 2010, despite making his debut in that year. His dismissal of Chris Gayle in the 2011 final was one instance that demonstrated his poise under duress and his readiness for a significant event.
Ashwin moved to different teams after a few years with the Super Kings. He was also given leadership duties at the Punjab Kings along the way, which have had varying degrees of success. He was used by the Rajasthan Royals as an all-rounder who could build the innings after the team lost a few early wickets by hitting through the middle overs.
In 2010 and 2011, Ashwin won the IPL championship twice. He also won a couple of Champions League titles with the Super Kings. According to his own record, he took 187 wickets overall at an average of 30.22 and an economy of 7.20 from 221 games. He also scored 833 runs coming down the order with the bat, including a single half-century.
