Manipur Musician Lynched in Delhi: Outcry Over Northeast Discrimination

The nation is reeling from the tragic death of Chongtham Vikram Singh, a talented musician from Imphal, Manipur, who was brutally assaulted and killed in Delhi's Ashram area on Sunday night, September 6, 2026. The incident, which police are investigating as a case of mob lynching, has ignited a fresh wave of concern and outcry over the pervasive discrimination faced by communities from Northeast India in various parts of the country.

According to Delhi police, Singh's fatal encounter began when he objected to loud noises emanating from dhabas near his home. His son, Yaiphaba, 20, later revealed in his statement to the police that his father knew some of his attackers and had been previously threatened by them for similar noise complaints. This suggests a history of tension that tragically escalated.

Singh's family recounted that he had stepped out of their home after dinner that fateful Sunday. The next they knew, he was being chased upstairs by a group of allegedly inebriated men.

Rushed to Holy Family Hospital, he tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day.

His body was then moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a post-mortem examination. In response to the horrific crime, police have apprehended seven men and a 15-year-old boy. The FIR has been registered under the section for mob lynching, underscoring the severity of the incident.

Civil society organizations, representing communities from Northeast India, have swiftly condemned the killing, calling for a broader societal introspection.

They urge that this incident not be dismissed as an isolated event but viewed as a stark manifestation of the ongoing challenges and prejudices faced by people from the region.
