Montreal Mourns: Officer, Civilian Dead in 'Nightmare' Hotel Shooting
Tragedy strikes Montreal as a police officer and a civilian are killed in a hotel shooting. Suspect neutralized. Was an 'incel' manifesto involved?
Montreal is grappling with a profound tragedy after a shooting at a Hilton hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood resulted in the deaths of a police officer, a civilian, and the gunman. The incident, which unfolded on Monday morning, has left the city in shock and mourning.
Emergency services received a call around 11:35 a.m. reporting a person with a firearm pointing it from a window. Responding officers engaged the shooter, who was fatally shot. Tragically, a Montreal police officer was killed in the line of duty—the first such loss in 24 years—and a civilian also lost their life. Another officer sustained serious but stable injuries, and a civilian received minor wounds.
While police have not publicly disclosed a motive, reports from Radio Canada suggest the shooter, who was neutralized by officers, may have had ties to the misogynistic 'incel' movement. A 'manifesto against women' reportedly released by the attacker contained views consistent with this violent subculture. Despite these reports, Québec’s Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière stated that authorities are considering it a 'domestic case' rather than a terrorism investigation for now, though all possibilities are being considered.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), the province’s police watchdog, has launched an investigation into the circumstances, particularly given the civilian fatality. Ten BEI investigators have been assigned to the case.
Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher described the day as 'very, very sad' and a 'nightmare.' Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada extended her deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the fallen officer, echoing the city's collective grief.
