Madras HC Allows Jana Nayagan Producers to Withdraw Petition, Moves to Revising Committee
Madras High Court approves withdrawal of the petition as Jana Nayagan heads to the CBFC Revising Committee for certification after earlier orders were revisited.
The Madras High Court on Tuesday allowed KVN Productions to withdraw its writ petition seeking a UA certificate for Vijay’s Tamil film Jana Nayagan, opting instead for the statutory review process before the Revising Committee. The producers submitted Jana Nayagan to the CBFC for certification on December 18, and the judge's order paves the way for the Revising Committee to examine the film.
A division bench earlier this year set aside a prior order directing the CBFC to issue a UA16+ certificate and ordered a fresh hearing. Following that ruling, the court recorded the producers’ decision to withdraw the petition, effectively closing the proceedings and enabling formal reference to the Revising Committee constituted by the CBFC.
The case had come to a halt after the CBFC referred Jana Nayagan to the Revising Committee just days before its planned Pongal release on January 9. Producers argued that the certification process was near completion after the Examining Committee recommended a UA16+ certificate with 14 cuts and modifications. The CBFC stated concerns over religious sentiments and the portrayal of the armed forces as reasons for the referral.
With the withdrawal approved, the Revising Committee is expected to review the film under the mandated guidelines. This move ends the immediate court battle and leaves the final certification decision to the CBFC’s revised review process. Fans and industry watchers are awaiting the committee’s verdict, which will determine the film’s release timeline and eligibility for certification.
