RoV Dive Begins to Check Mullaperiyar Dam’s Structural Safety
Underwater RoV inspection starts at Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki to gauge structural integrity, with high-resolution imaging planned as experts assess erosion and strength.
An underwater inspection using a remotely operated vehicle began at Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki on Tuesday to assess the dam's structural integrity. The team is focusing on the waterfront portion of the 1,200-ft-long structure, conducting the survey in 100-metre segments. After each 100-metre stretch is scanned, the dam’s width will be further divided into 50-metre intervals for more detailed sweeps, with the middle portion later divided into 10-metre sections to capture high-resolution images of the waterfront area. Earlier studies by the Kerala government had found that the lime-surki mortar and cement mix had eroded, leaving stones visible at a depth of about 110 feet. The RoV study was ordered following a directive from the Supreme Court and is led by experts from the Central Soil and Materials Research Station, Delhi, using an ROV brought from France.
