Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to Godzilla Minus One. A stark teaser hints at a darker, expansive kaiju saga from Toho.
The King of Monsters is getting ready to roar once more. Oscar-winning director and visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki will once again be directing Godzilla Minus Zero, also known as Godzilla -0.0, the follow-up to the 2023 smash hit Godzilla Minus One, according to the title announced Monday morning by legendary Tokyo-based Toho Studios.

During this year's "Godzilla Day 2025" event in Tokyo, the title was revealed along with a teaser logo and first-look artwork. Both pieces leaned toward stark black-and-white brushstrokes that echoed the previous movie's minimalist branding. The emblem was co-drawn by Yamazaki, suggesting artistic continuity and possibly hinting at a more sinister, expansive monster mythoscape.

Godzilla Minus One established a number of new standards. It was made on a reported budget of only $15 million, but it surprised everyone by making over $113 million worldwide and winning the Oscar for best visual effects, making it the first Godzilla movie to do so in the 70-year history of the franchise (in a category crowded with Hollywood tentpoles with vastly bigger budgets).

At the North American box office, it also became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese movie ever. Insiders claim that the new movie is being marketed as both a statement piece and a sequel. Production is reportedly set to ramp up in New Zealand and Norway later this year, and Yamazaki and Toho are securing a late-2026 global release window.
Toho is anticipated to expand the scope and ambition of Godzilla Minus Zero, building on the success of Minus One. This will be done by utilizing a resurgent monster franchise that is now firmly established in blockbuster-prestige territory for Western audiences. Aside from the co-productions with Legendary Entertainment in the United States, Godzilla Minus Zero will be the 31st Japanese film in the renowned kaiju franchise.
