HDFC Bank, one of India's leading private sector lenders, has announced a significant leadership change with the appointment of Anup Bagchi as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. This highly anticipated move, sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on October 1, 2026, will see Bagchi officially take the reins from October 27, 2026.
Bagchi will succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure concludes on October 26, 2026. The RBI has approved Bagchi's appointment for a three-year term, extending until October 26, 2029. The bank's board has also given its nod for his induction as an additional director from October 2, pending shareholder approval.
With a career spanning over three decades, Bagchi brings a wealth of experience to HDFC Bank.
A distinguished alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore, he has spent a significant portion of his career with the ICICI Group, joining them in 1992. His extensive background covers retail banking, capital markets, wholesale banking, treasury, and insurance.
During his time as an executive director at ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, Bagchi was instrumental in leading various critical segments, including retail, business, and rural banking, before transitioning to wholesale banking. He is credited with strengthening ICICI Bank's retail loan book through robust cost and credit underwriting practices and skillfully overseeing operations during the challenging demonetisation period.
He has also held leadership roles as chairman of ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, CEO and MD of ICICI Securities, and most recently, MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, where he spearheaded impressive growth, pushing annualised premium equivalent past the ₹10,000 crore mark for the first time in FY25.
At HDFC Bank, Bagchi's primary mandate will involve strategically expanding the bank's loan portfolio, navigating the complexities of credit-deposit dynamics in a competitive interest-rate environment, and effectively leveraging the synergies stemming from the recent merger of Housing Development Finance Corporation with the bank.
His predecessor, Sashidhar Jagdishan, successfully guided HDFC Bank through the pandemic, expanded its digital footprint, and oversaw the historic merger.
This appointment marks a new chapter for HDFC Bank, with expectations high for Bagchi to continue its growth trajectory and innovate in the evolving banking landscape. The succession plan was initiated by the bank's board in mid-September 2026, leading to the RBI's formal clearance on October 1, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
