The political atmosphere in West Bengal has shifted dramatically, leaving the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in a state of high tension and uncertainty. In what is being described as a significant crackdown, the party is facing a wave of high-profile resignations, internal disputes, and mounting legal challenges that are threatening its internal stability.
A major blow to the party came as Lok Sabha MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar resigned from all her party posts. Her departure has been accompanied by a public fallout with TMC Lok Sabha Chief Whip Kalyan Banerjee. Dastidar has reportedly written to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking permission to prosecute Banerjee, alleging misbehavior in Parliament. While Banerjee has questioned the timing of these allegations, suggesting they are a distraction from legal pressures in the Narada case, the public rift has exposed deep fractures within the party leadership.
The exodus continues with TMC spokesperson Santanu Sen, who also stepped down from his post today. In a letter addressed to Mamata Banerjee, Sen cited corruption and "immoral acts" within the party as the reasons for his departure, specifically mentioning that his mind no longer agrees with the party's direction. These resignations follow a string of controversies that have put the TMC on the defensive across the state.
The scale of the crisis is evident at the grassroots level as well. Reports indicate that approximately 127 TMC leaders and councillors from various municipalities and gram panchayats have resigned. This mass departure is happening alongside a massive legal crackdown, with over 181 FIRs filed against TMC leaders and dozens of arrests already made.
Adding to the pressure, BJP leaders are claiming that more defections are on the horizon. BJP MP Soumitra Khan recently claimed that if given the green signal from leadership in Delhi, up to 20 TMC MPs are ready to join the BJP, a move he believes could lead to the collapse of the current administration. As the state grapples with this political upheaval, the future of the TMC leadership remains a subject of intense speculation in Bengal's political circles.
