A tragic incident in Biddeford, Maine, has ignited a political firestorm, putting significant pressure on Senator Susan Collins as she faces a challenging re-election bid. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Joan Sebastian Guerrero shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday, an event that has drawn sharp criticism from national figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
Guerrero, who was authorized to work in the United States, was killed in an incident that witnesses described as deeply distressing. According to the Portland Press Herald, a distressed family was heard yelling “you took her dad,” with a child, reportedly no older than three and still in “Bluey pajamas,” present at the scene. This heart-wrenching detail has amplified public outcry and scrutiny of ICE’s operations.
The incident quickly became a focal point for Democrats challenging Senator Collins, the sole Republican senator from New England and chairwoman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. Representative Ocasio-Cortez did not mince words, accusing Collins of writing a “blank check” for ICE and enabling the kind of actions seen in Biddeford. “Senator Collins wrote the blank check to allow these officers to conduct themselves in the way that they have in Maine in the first place, and she's the one who's poured resources into it,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.
AOC further criticized Collins for her vote earlier this year to allocate $70 billion to ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This vote occurred on a party-line basis after a months-long shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. While Democrats and Republicans initially agreed on funding for much of Homeland Security, Republicans then pushed a separate, party-line bill specifically to fund ICE and CBP. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that merely witnessing the “atrocities” Collins has enabled does not absolve her responsibility.
This controversy strikes at a critical time for Senator Collins, who is seeking re-election in Maine, a state that notably voted for Kamala Harris. Democrats vying to unseat her have seized on the incident, highlighting her record on immigration matters and her role in funding the agency involved in the fatal shooting. The situation underscores the intense political climate surrounding immigration enforcement and accountability.
