Seven lives were tragically lost on Saturday morning in a horrific head-on collision on the A66 in Teesside, leaving the local community in shock and mourning. Among the deceased are two dedicated police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who were in a marked armed response vehicle when it was struck by a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way.
The devastating incident also claimed the lives of the five young men in the Passat: Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 16, Jacob Matusiak, 23, and Makai Saddington, 18. The collision occurred in the early hours, sending ripples of grief throughout the region.
Tributes have been pouring in for all those who perished, with particular recognition for the bravery and service of the two police officers. Redcar MP Anna Turley, who is also the Home Office minister, expressed the profound sorrow felt by the community, stating that it was "devastating" to consider the grief of all the families involved. She noted that the entire community was "reeling" from the tragedy.
MP Turley emphasized the importance of avoiding speculation surrounding the incident, urging the public to allow the grieving families privacy during this incredibly difficult time. She also paid tribute to PC Blades and PC Clough, highlighting the incredible bravery shown by police officers every day. "No one should not come home to their families at the end of their shift," she remarked, underscoring the inherent risks faced by emergency personnel.
Further tributes revealed the personal impact of the officers' lives. PC Blades, for instance, had recently joined Seaton Carew FC as a coach and was set to coach his own son in a new under-sevens team. The club expressed their devastation, extending their thoughts and deepest condolences to all affected. The incident has prompted heartfelt sympathy for all the victims and their loved ones, alongside gratitude for the emergency services who responded to the "horrific incident."
