Justice Prevails: Indians Return Home After Year-Long Ordeal in Bangladesh

After an arduous year-long legal battle, four Indian nationals, including two minors, have finally returned home to India from Bangladesh. This resolution comes after they were reportedly detained by Delhi Police last year and then pushed across the border into Bangladesh. The group arrived back in India on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the international border in Malda district, West Bengal.

Trinamool Congress leader Samirul Islam lauded the Indian judiciary's crucial intervention in securing their return. Mr. Islam, who is also a Trinamool MP and former chairperson of the West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board, shared the news on social media, emphasizing that while legitimate deportation of illegal migrants is acceptable, genuine Indian citizens should never face injustice or harassment.

The returnees included Sweety Bibi and her two young sons, along with the husband of Sunali Khatun. Ms. Khatun herself had made a similar return in December 2025, accompanied by her minor son, following a prior intervention by the Supreme Court. At the time of her initial pushback, Ms. Khatun was heavily pregnant and later gave birth in a state-run hospital in Bengal after her return. Her father had voiced concerns that a child born in Bangladesh under such circumstances might lose claim to Indian citizenship.

According to Mr. Islam, the four individuals endured over a year in Bangladesh, having been pushed back in June 2025. He highlighted the lengthy struggle, noting that even Bangladesh had formally requested India to take back its citizens who had been illegally pushed across the border, yet the process took an extended period. The plight of these families, along with two other migrants, first gained public attention when they released a video pleading with then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for their repatriation. Mr. Islam played a significant role in bringing their difficult situation to light, particularly focusing on Ms. Khatun's case. Their return marks the end of a challenging ordeal and a victory for justice.
