TN Election: EPIC from any constituency valid if name on roll, says ECI
ECI clarifies voters can use EPIC issued in another constituency as long as their name appears on the local polling station's electoral roll.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) clarified on March 18, 2026 that an elector may use an EPIC issued by the Electoral Registration Officer of a different Assembly constituency, provided the voter's name appears on the electoral roll of the polling station where they plan to vote. This is a relief for voters who have migrated and are awaiting a new EPIC, as the card from another constituency will be accepted as valid identity proof so long as the name is on the local roll. The clarification also stresses that simply possessing an EPIC or any other prescribed identity document does not automatically entitle someone to vote; their name must be on the electoral roll of the polling station. Overseas electors registered under Section 20A, based on their Indian passport, will be identified at the polling station only on the basis of their original passport. When a voter cannot produce an EPIC, a list of alternative photo ID proofs will be accepted, including Aadhaar card, MGNREGA job card, bank or post office passbooks with a photo, Health Insurance Smart Card under Labour or the Ayushman Bharat Health Card, driving licence, PAN card, NPR smart card, Indian passport, pension document with photo, or service identity cards with a photo. In another development, Tamil Nadu is set for a 38-day election campaign window, the same length as in 2021, as the state prepares for voting in the assembly polls. These clarifications aim to smoothen the voting process for residents who have recently migrated within Tamil Nadu and for those who may face gaps in obtaining a new EPIC before polling day.
