Rohit Sharma ends his streak of playing in every T20 World Cup as he becomes the official ambassador for the 2026 edition, set to watch from home while India eyes more glory.
Rohit Sharma’s remarkable run of appearing in every T20 World Cup since the tournament’s inception is set to end. He has been named the official ambassador for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The 2026 edition is to be staged with India and Sri Lanka co-hosting, and Rohit will take a new seat in the stands, watching from home for the first time in his career since making his World Cup debuts.
The former India captain, who retired from T20Is last June and has since focused on ODIs and other duties, said the shift to life as a retired player is an ongoing adjustment. He described the thought of “watching the World Cup on television” as a new experience, even as he reflects on the challenges of winning global trophies and the significance of India’s recent triumphs.
Rohit recalled his three ICC titles—two as captain—and spoke about the long journey from India’s drought-breaking wins to the current optimism around a new generation led by Suryakumar Yadav. With Yadav taking charge of India’s campaign at the 2026 event, Rohit hopes the next set of players can carry forward the momentum and become the first side to retain the T20 title if history repeats itself. The idea of not being in the dressing room will take some getting used to, but Rohit said he is gradually finding comfort in this new chapter and looks forward to supporting the team from a different vantage point.
