Assam Opposition Forms Anti-BJP Front Ahead of 2026 Polls

Guwahati: The Assam unit of Congress and seven other parties have decided to form an anti-BJP front ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections to defeat the BJP and its allies. The eight parties include Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(M-L) and the All-Party Hill Leaders’ Conference. The leaders announced that there is a broad consensus to unite against the current government and to strategise for a new people’s government in Assam. This move reflects growing attempts to consolidate opposition voices ahead of the polls. The attendees at the meeting include Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal, Manoranjan Talukdar of CPI(M), Rajya Sabha member Ajit Kumar Bhuyan of AGM, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi of AJP. Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president, said the eight parties would meet again to map out their campaign against the BJP and its allies and to cement a plan to energise voters. Jitendra Singh, the All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Assam, said the alliance intends to remove Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from power in 2026. He emphasised that the opposition bloc would unite to form a new government by standing against what they call misrule, corruption, and oppression under the present administration. The Chief Minister responded by downplaying the development, noting that opposition meetings and infighting are common and can even be over the phone; he warned that such meetings often amount to media talk rather than real strategy. This marks the second major attempt to craft a Congress-led grand alliance against the BJP in Assam, with leaders signalling another round of discussions to firm up their approach before the elections.
