In a highly emotional address on the 60th foundation day of Shiv Sena (UBT), Uddhav Thackeray made a dramatic offer to resign as the party president. His proposal came amidst allegations from defected parliamentarians, which he implied were believed by some within his own leadership. Thackeray also vowed to initiate “Operation Lotus” as a counter-measure to what he called “Operation Tiger,” an alleged attempt by the Shiv Sena faction to lure six of his party's nine Lok Sabha MPs into their fold.
Mr. Thackeray used the platform at Mumbai's Shanmukhanand Hall to vehemently deny claims that his party was contemplating a merger with the Congress. He strongly criticized the BJP, accusing them of engaging in “dirty politics.” He also asserted that Gen Z, despite being disparagingly labeled “cockroaches,” would be instrumental in bringing about change in the country. Thackeray further challenged the ruling party, questioning why 2.5 lakh paramilitary forces were deployed in West Bengal “to defeat a woman” while similar numbers were not stationed in troubled regions like Manipur or Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He warned that the BJP's rhetoric was shifting from “One Nation, One Election” to a more alarming “One Nation, No Election,” expressing concern that such politics erodes public faith in democracy and leads towards anarchy.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, at his own foundation day event at NESCO Ground in Goregaon, hinted at further defections from the Shiv Sena (UBT). Issuing a veiled warning to the Uddhav-led faction, Shinde declared, "This is just a trailer, the picture is yet to come." He confidently asserted that his faction is growing stronger, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) is steadily losing its support base. Shinde criticized the opposition's tactics and reiterated his commitment to Hindutva, claiming his party has gained significant strength since the split.
The contrasting events highlight the deepening chasm within the Shiv Sena, with both factions celebrating their foundation day separately while engaging in a public war of words and accusations.
