Apple Pay Set to Launch in India Next Month, Partnering with Axis Bank! 🇮🇳💳
Get ready, India! Apple Pay is reportedly launching in October 2026, starting with Axis Bank credit cards. Experience secure, contactless payments on your iPhone. Big competition for UPI! #ApplePayIndia #DigitalPayments
Apple Pay, the tech giant's popular mobile payment service, is reportedly gearing up for its highly anticipated launch in India next month, specifically October 2026. This move marks Apple's latest push into one of the world's largest and fastest-growing economies, aiming to capture a share of its bustling digital payments market.
India stands as one of the few major global economies where Apple Pay has not yet been introduced, making this a significant development.
The service promises a seamless tap-and-pay experience for iPhone users. It works by securely storing tokenized credit card details on your device, eliminating the need to open separate payment apps for transactions. When making a purchase, users can simply double-click the side button on their iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticate using FaceID, TouchID, or a device passcode, and then hold their device near a contactless payment reader.
A key security feature is that your actual credit card number is never shared with the merchant or stored on Apple's servers; instead, a unique device account number and a one-time security code are used for each transaction.
Initially, Apple Pay is expected to roll out in India through a partnership with Axis Bank for its credit card holders.
Mumbai-based Axis Bank is the fourth-largest credit card issuer in the country, making it a strategic first partner.
This means Axis Bank credit card owners with an iPhone or Apple Watch will soon be able to make secure, physical card-free transactions.
Reports also indicate that Apple is in discussions with other major Indian lenders, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, to expand support for its payment platform, although commercial terms are still being ironed out.
Discussions with payment networks Mastercard and Visa have also been reported.
Apple Pay will enter a highly competitive digital payments landscape in India, which is currently dominated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI accounts for a staggering 84 percent of India's total digital payments volume, offering QR code, phone number, and tap-to-pay options. Global players like Google Pay, Walmart-backed PhonePe, and Amazon Pay, along with homegrown platforms like Paytm, already have a strong foothold.
It will be interesting to see how Apple's offering differentiates itself and integrates with the existing ecosystem, especially given the recent debate around the Indian government's 0.4 percent UPI merchant fee on some transactions. This launch coincides with Apple's rapidly expanding presence in India, where its smartphone market share has doubled to 8% since 2022, and a significant portion of global iPhones are now assembled.
