US at UNSC: 25 Years After 9/11, We Hunted Down Bin Laden Together

On the 25th anniversary of the horrific September 11 attacks, the United States addressed the UN Security Council (UNSC), marking a significant moment as the body adopted its first presidential statement on counter-terrorism in five years. The U.S. envoy highlighted the collective efforts in hunting down Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, dismantling ISIS's caliphate, and neutralizing other militant leaders like al-Baghdadi and al-Zawahiri.

Speaking at the briefing titled 'Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts,' U.S.

Ambassador Mike Waltz emphasized that the pain of terrorism is a shared global experience.

He noted that nearly every country represented at the UNSC table has lost personnel in the fight against terrorism, citing examples like the devastating 2014 Peshawar school massacre in Pakistan and the 2005 London bombings.

The UNSC's presidential statement unequivocally condemned the 9/11 attacks in New York, Arlington, and Pennsylvania, reaffirming that all acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of motivation. The statement also stressed that terrorism should never be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or group.

The Council expressed ongoing concern about the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups like ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaeda and their affiliates worldwide. Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council, was present during these remarks.

Its UN envoy, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, underscored Pakistan's own significant contributions to the global fight against terror, while also expressing deep worry about the terrorism threats in various regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and Afghanistan.

The session served as a powerful reminder of the enduring global commitment to combating terrorism and preventing future atrocities.
