In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Conference on Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms at the Supreme Court, saying ease of doing business and ease of living are possible only when ease of justice is ensured.
He highlighted that Lok Adalats and pre-litigation settlements are resolving millions of disputes quickly, amicably, and at low cost. He noted that under the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System, nearly 800,000 criminal cases have been resolved in just three years, extending justice to the poor, Dalits, oppressed, and deprived sections.
The PM underscored that justice should be accessible to everyone, timely, and reach people without regard to social or financial background, because that makes justice the foundation of social justice. He added that mediation has long been part of our civilization and that the new Mediation Act gives it a modern form.
Technology is becoming a medium for inclusion and empowerment, with the e-courts project cited as a positive example in justice delivery. He also launched the Community Mediation Training Module prepared by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) as part of the two-day conference.
The remarks come as the government pushes reforms to speed up justice delivery and broaden access, aligning legal aid with the aim of reducing backlogs and ensuring accountability for marginalized communities.
