Italy's Winter Games kickoff promises harmony, fashion nods, and a cross-Alps spectacle from Milan’s San Siro.
The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics officially open with a star-studded ceremony at the San Siro Stadium, launching a three-hour extravaganza that will also travel to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo. The opening marks the most geographically dispersed Games in history, with the spectacle beginning in Milan at 1900 GMT and looping across the Alps and Dolomites to minimize athlete travel.
Creative director Marco Balich has promised a show that centers on harmony, weaving together elements from Italy’s financial hub and its snow-capped mountain towns into a narrative of unity and forward-looking energy. The production will pay homage to Italian design and fashion, including a tribute to designer Giorgio Armani who passed away last year, signaling a bridge between past elegance and a modern Italian future.
For the first time, the 2,900 athletes will parade through the venues closest to where they will compete, a logistical shift designed to streamline travel and keep the focus on competition and celebration rather than long transfers.
On stage, a lineup of internationally renowned performers is set to bring the ceremony to life, including American singer Mariah Carey, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Chinese pianist Lang Lang. Dozens of dignitaries are expected to attend, among them United States Vice President JD Vance and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The organizers say the opening ceremony will reach a global audience of hundreds of millions, offering a platform to convey messages of unity and resilience amid a rapidly changing world.
