Bank of Baroda Pays $600M to End NMC Health Dispute, Shares Plummet!
Bank of Baroda settles a long-standing fraud dispute with NMC Health for $600 million, causing its shares to drop over 7%. Discover the details of this costly resolution.
Bank of Baroda (BoB) shares have experienced significant selling pressure, plummeting over 7% across two trading sessions on July 3rd and 4th. This sharp decline follows the public sector lender's disclosure of an out-of-court settlement with the joint administrators of NMC Health PLC, NMC Healthcare Ltd, and NMC Holding.
The bank announced on July 2, 2026, that it has agreed to pay a staggering $600 million, approximately Rs 5,700 crore, to resolve a years-long legal dispute. This agreement effectively brings an end to a protracted legal battle stemming from alleged fraud and the complex cross-border insolvency of the NMC Group.
The roots of this litigation trace back to the collapse of NMC Health, once a prominent private healthcare provider in the UAE. In 2020, a forensic audit uncovered billions of dollars in previously undisclosed debt, leading to the company's downfall. Founded by NRI businessman B.R. Shetty, NMC Health subsequently entered insolvency, which triggered a cascade of legal proceedings across various international jurisdictions. Efforts to recover funds for creditors led to insolvency proceedings initiated before the Abu Dhabi Global Market Court and the High Court of Justice of England and Wales.
Bank of Baroda was a major lender to NMC Health's operations in the UAE, and its involvement became a central point of contention. Administrators in court alleged that Bank of Baroda facilitated fictitious financing arrangements, which critically helped conceal NMC's true debt position. These serious allegations led to legal proceedings being filed against B.R. Shetty, former NMC Health CEO Prashant Manghat, and Bank of Baroda before the Abu Dhabi Global Market Court of First Instance. The $600 million settlement now resolves BoB's part in these extensive fraud and insolvency proceedings.
Despite the negative news, Bank of Baroda recently reported robust business updates. Its global business grew 15.46% year-on-year to Rs 30.51 lakh crore as of June 30, 2026. Global advances saw an increase of 17.42% year-on-year to Rs 14.17 lakh crore, and global deposits rose by 13.81% year-on-year to Rs 16.34 lakh crore during the same period. However, these positive operational figures have been overshadowed by the substantial financial outlay and reputational concerns associated with the NMC Health settlement.
