AI Breakthrough: UK Patient's Sight Saved in World-First Brain Surgery!

In a groundbreaking medical first, a 48-year-old man, Rhys Hibbert, has successfully undergone brain tumour removal surgery with the assistance of real-time artificial intelligence. The pioneering procedure, carried out at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in London, part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, marks a significant leap forward in neurosurgery.

The novel technology employs AI to analyze live surgical feeds and identify minuscule brain anatomy through colour-coding, or segmenting, crucial structures. This real-time guidance helps clinicians recognize and safely navigate delicate areas. While the hospital has utilized this technology as a research tool for some time, Mr.

Hibbert's operation in May was the very first instance of its use on a live patient.

The AI's role was pivotal in removing a growth on Mr. Hibbert's pituitary gland. In this part of the brain, critical structures like blood vessels and nerves controlling vision are densely packed.

As officials noted, "going a millimetre wrong can make a critical difference." The AI precisely highlighted which areas to avoid, ensuring the tumour was successfully removed without damaging vital surrounding tissues.

Mr. Hibbert, who was diagnosed in 2024 and hails from Bedfordshire, expressed immense relief and gratitude, stating the operation saved his sight. Without the surgery, the tumour could have led to blindness. Now, he's back at work as a customer services manager and a community volunteer.

He reflected on the significance, saying,

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery was founded in 1859… and was the world's first dedicated neurosurgical hospital. So to me, it seems very fitting that the same hospital should also be the world's first to carry out an AI-assisted neurosurgery. I'm very pleased to have had the opportunity to be cared for in the hospital… I'm also very humbled to have been asked.
