Greta Gerwig brings The Magician's Nephew to screens in 2027 with a star-studded cast, opening theatrically Feb. 12 and streaming on Netflix April 2.
Greta Gerwig is taking on C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia with The Magician's Nephew, her first adaptation of the earliest chronologically book in the series. The film features a star-studded cast, including Daniel Craig, Meryl Streep, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan, with David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell among others, and a score by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
The movie will open in IMAX and traditional theaters on February 12, 2027, and will stream on Netflix on April 2, 2027. It had previously been slated for a Thanksgiving 2026 release before shifting to 2027, as Netflix strengthens its wide theatrical strategy.
This marks the first time The Magician's Nephew has been adapted for a feature film. The story reveals how Narnia came to life and sets up events that lead to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Earlier attempts to bring the series to screen included a BBC adaptation in 1988 and a 2005 film adaptation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, with two sequels in development under different studios.
Gerwig has spoken about loving the idea of magic, hidden worlds, and the idea that a universe can be built out of music, hinting at a bold, music-infused approach to the fantasy saga. The project signals a bold pivot for Narnia on the big screen, pairing Gerwig's distinctive sensibility with a global ensemble.
