Pawan Khera Questioned by Guwahati Police in Passport Forgery Case

Pawan Khera, a senior Congress leader, appeared before the Guwahati Crime Branch for questioning in connection with a forgery and defamation case filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He arrived in Guwahati with a team of lawyers and was taken to the Crime Branch office where investigators asked questions about the basis of his earlier allegations and the documents he had relied upon. Sharma had lodged the case after Khera claimed she possessed multiple passports and undisclosed foreign assets, a claim she later described as forged. She filed the complaint in Guwahati on April 5, prompting a formal police inquiry.

Based on the complaint, police registered the case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections on false statements in elections, cheating, forgery of valuable security or public records, use of forged documents as genuine, intentional insult, and defamation, among others. During the interrogation, Khera and his advocate reiterated that he had shared documents to substantiate his allegations, and noted that prior anticipatory bail granted by the Supreme Court carried a condition to appear before police and cooperate with the investigation.

Khera’s counsel said the law would take its course, and that the party supports due process. The complainant, Riniki Sharma, has rejected the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, and she subsequently filed a formal complaint with Assam Police. The case continues as investigators sift through the documents presented by Khera and assess the veracity of the claims about foreign assets and passports.
