Billy Joel returned to the stage for the first time since revealing his brain disorder diagnosis, joining a Florida tribute band for a surprise two-song set at Wellington's 30th-anniversary celebration. The Piano Man performed with Turnstiles on Friday night for two songs: We Didn't Start the Fire and Big Shot. Joel joked, I wasn't planning on working tonight, as he sat at the piano beside the band.
Officials described his condition as normal pressure hydrocephalus and said it has been exacerbated by recent performances, causing hearing, vision and balance issues. His team has said he is undergoing targeted physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery. Joel has repeatedly stressed that he’s not dying and he feels good despite the diagnosis, with his daughter Della and Remy dancing along on stage.
The surprise appearance took place during Wellington's 30th-anniversary celebration in an outdoor venue in Palm Beach County, near where Joel owns property. The moment underscored a cautious but ongoing return to live music after his last concert on February 22, 2025, and after May 2025 revelations of his diagnosis.
The two-song set felt like a tempered celebration—joyful for fans, but a reminder of the fragility of a comeback. The performance by Turnstiles, a tribute band, energized the crowd and his family, with daughters Della and Remy dancing nearby, signaling a personal, hopeful return to the spotlight.
